Braun takes out teammate in dugout

It was a scary scene in the Brewer’s dugout on Saturday night at Miller Park. It is not unusual for Ryan Braun to take a practice swing in the dugout before heading to the on deck circle. However, in an unfortunate occurrence, this particular swing connected with the face of teammate Jean Seguar. The shortstop was taken to the clubhouse where he was stitched up by the team’s plastic surgeon.

After the game, Manager Ron Roenicke said that Segura does not have a concussion or fracture but he did suffer a significant laceration under his right eye.

As karma would have it, Braun also left the game with a right intercostal strain in the ninth inning. He is listed as day-to-day.

Hopefully Saturday was the last time we see that kind of meaningless swing from Mr. Braun. Jeff Bianchi will play SS until Seguar is able to return.

Pirates Closer Jason Grilli serves Grilled Cheese at Pittsburgh Food Bank

jason-grilli-feeding-america1

“Grilled Cheese” is the name that many Pirates fans use to refer to their Closer Jason Grilli. In the spirit of April being National Grilled Cheese Month Grilli found a fitting way to give back to the Pittsburgh community. Wednesday, Grilli spent part of his day volunteering at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

While there he spoke to roughly 150 people, then proceeded to grill and serve grilled cheese to families in need. This was done with the help of Land O’Lakes who donated 40,000 pounds of cheese products that will help provide more than 33,000 meals. According to the USDA, 49 million Americans are at risk of hunger.

“For a community that has given me so much — me and my family — and shown how much you love the Pirates and make sports an integral part of your daily lives, it was so easy to try and find a way to give back to you,” Grilli told the crowd of approximately 150 people just before lunch. “I like striking people out, but to be able to help strike out hunger is something that has been near and dear to my heart for a long time.”

Grilli’s Twitter handle is @GrillCheese49

Great spending time with helping others today. Do something today to help strikeout hunger.

MLB issues 4 suspensions after Brewers-Pirates brawl

MLB issues 4 suspensions after Brewers-Pirates brawl

Tuesday the MLB announced that 4 players – 2 Brewers and 2 Pirates – will receive suspensions for their involvement in the benches clearing brawl at PNC Park on Easter Sunday.

Martin Maldonado, the Brewers backup catcher, will be forced to sit out 5 games after he punched Pirates outfielder Travis Snider in the face. Snider will serve a 2 game suspension for his involvement in the scrum which began between Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomes and Pirates starting pitcher Gerrit Cole in the top of the 3rd inning. Gomes received a 3 game suspension.

Pirates catcher, Russell Martin, will be required to sit out 1 game for helping Snider tackle Gomez to the ground.

In addition, all 4 players must pay a fine but the amounts have not been released. The suspensions are in effect starting Tuesday night unless the players decide to appeal.

The Pirates and Brewers meet again on May 13 for a three-game series in Milwaukee.

Series Recap: Cardinals vs. Nationals

Image

After taking two out of three games from the Brewers in Milwaukee, the Cards traveled to the nation’s capitol for their first best-of-four series of the year against the Washington Nationals, their first match up out of the Central Division this year.

The Red Birds are holding onto their 2nd place spot in the Central Division, behind the hot Milwaukee Brewers and just ahead of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and looked to take lead of the Central Division with these four games.

All started to go as planned in Game 1, Adam Wainwright held the Nats at just two hits and no runs as the Cards shut out the Nationals 8-0. Offense got right to it in the top of the first inning with three rbi hits to make the score 3-0 in no time. An error in the top of the fourth followed by RBIs in the 6th and 7th inning gave the Cardinals a comfortable lead going into the final innings. Wainwright pitched 8 strikeouts and had an ERA of 1.80 to take Game 1 of this four game series

Friday night was an even match after a home run by Anthony Rendon and an RBI single by Mark Ellis to tie it at one. In the bottom of the seventh, a wild pitch by Michael Wacha would bring in two runs for the Nationals to put the final score at 1-3, dropping Game 2 for the National League Champs.

Game 3 the Cardinals got back in the game and started scoring early in the second inning with RBIs from Tony Cruz and Lance Lynn to start their 3-0 lead. With a 4-1 lead going into the eighth inning, the Nationals attempted to rally with an RBI in the bottom of the eighth as well as the ninth inning, but the Cards walked away Saturday night with a 4-3 win.

Sunday came and the Cardinals looked to leave Washington that day with 3 wins out of 4 games. After holding a 2-0 lead over six innings, the Nats came back to tie it in the bottom of the seventh off of two RBI singles. Then with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth, the Nationals split the series with a 3-2 win.

The Cardinals travel to New York tonight to take on the Mets in another four game series at 7:10 pm.
